A Study Of Fabric

Personal work is an important part of my process, I am always trying to learn new things in between by regular project. So I decided to do this study to better understand motion and aesthetics of a piece of cloth, I tried putting it in different situations to see how far can I go with it.

Also, I have been wishing to add Houdini in my arsenal of tools for quite some time now, and this project looked like a perfect opportunity for me to dig deeper into this beautiful piece of software. Everything was simulated in houdini, rendered in redshift/octane in cinema 4D, and of course a bunch of adobe tools to get the most out of it. Hope you like it. :)

For the project I tried to simulate fabric based physics in different scenarios to test and push my understanding of Houdini. Also I wanted to texture the fabrics in many different ways as texturing

Paracord sim and material

A simple animation to test out para cord like physical behavior,
The textures were made in substance designer for better control over the material.

The project was a great exercise, I learned a lot about fabric simulations and aesthetics, my takeaways would be to always keep in mind the realistic scale of the fabric you want to simulate. The size plays a major role, its a simple thing and we skip it most of the time, but the sim is what will make the base of the animation strong.
Aesthetically to make the fabric realistic always add opacity and color falloff on the cloth material, these little details make the fabric more believable and beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed going through this little research, this page was made days after I worked on this project hence its not as detailed, but the upcoming projects will have every small and big details.
